The arrival of nearly 100 of the world’s best women cyclists, including the world number one and numerous Olympic medal winners, is a significant coup for Northamptonshire.

The very first Women’s Tour starts from Oundle next Wednesday and takes in a large number of towns and villages in the county over the course of its first two days.

There is much kudos attached to hosting the start of the race, as well as having two of its five stages go through the county.

The event will showcase the fantastic towns and countryside we have in Northamptonshire to national television audiences.

As well as enhancing the reputation of the county and putting us on the map, there are undoubted economic benefits that should not be under-estimated.

Cycling is big business.

Professional riders are just part of teams that bring with them large numbers of support staff, all of whom need somewhere to stay, eat and drink during the event.

Those who worked hard behind the scenes to secure this national event for the county should be applauded.

We encourage people of the county to get out and line the route to cheer on the cyclists.

This is a major national sporting event and will be a significant spectacle.

And we encourage people inspired by the Women’s Tour to get on their own bikes and get healthy.
