Young book-borrowers from Northamptonshire are downloading more e-books from county libraries, says the county council.

Northamptonshire Libraries say the number of e-books being downloaded through its online library service has risen from 318 to 785 in the past year – an increase of 147 per cent.

Among the most popular e-books with young adults are The Mortal Instruments novels by best-selling author Cassandra Clare, who has three books from the series in the top 10.

All three books from the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins also appear in the list of the most downloaded titles.

Cllr Robin Brown, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: “We’ve worked hard to increase the number and variety of e-books available for children and young people this year and I’m pleased to see that more young people are downloading our e-books as a result.

“Reading plays a huge part in encouraging good health and wellbeing, as well as improving performance and attainment in school.”

Almost 10,000 e-books have been downloaded by adult borrowers within the past year, with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels taking the top 16 spots in the most popular downloads chart.

People with a full library membership can download books for free through Northamptonshire libraries, while virtual memberships are also available.

Books can be downloaded to PCs, MACs, iPads, smartphones and all e-book readers except Kindle, due to Amazon guidelines.

Meanwhile, readers who prefer traditional books can continue to visit one of the 36 libraries across Northamptonshire or the two mobile libraries.
