Temporary changes to bin collections in Wellingborough will come into force next month.

The garden waste service will stop during the winter months, and there will also be some changes to collection days over Christmas.

Brown garden waste bins, which are collected fortnightly, will stop the week starting Tuesday, October 21, for residents who put their brown bins out with their green recycling bins, and from the week of October 28 for those who put them out with their black household waste bins.

The collections will start again mid-March.

Household waste and recycling collections will continue as usual over the winter months, although there will be some changes over the Christmas period.

All collections will be at least one day earlier than usual over Christmas and New Year and residents are being advised to check the calendar to make sure they don’t miss their revised collection day.

New calendars explaining all the changes have been made available to download from the council’s website at www.wellingborough.gov.uk.

For people without internet access, calendars can be picked up from the council’s reception at Swanspool House.

Refuse crews from Wellingborough Norse, the company which carries out environmental services on behalf of the council, will also have a small supply of calendars to hand out to residents when asked.

Cllr Morrall, chairman of the council’s services committee, said: “We pause the garden waste collections during the winter months to make the best possible use of our resources.

“As people know, council funding has been reduced significantly over the past few years and that’s meant we have to change the way some services are provided.

“We carefully looked at the amount of garden waste previously collected throughout the year, and decided that the service would only be provided between March and October, as that’s when residents make the greatest use of it.

“During the winter we would advise residents to take any garden waste they do have to their nearest recycling centre, or compost it at home.”

If residents have any questions about collection dates or would like more information on recycling and composting, they can go to the council’s website or call Norse on 01933 234 520.

If there are any additional changes to bin collections during the winter months, for example if disruptions occur due to bad weather, information will be kept up to date on the website and via the council’s Twitter account @BCWboro.
