A group of adventurous pupils from Wellingborough School will be trekking in the Sahara to raise money for charity.

Housemaster Keith Hargreaves has organised the trip for 22 boys aged 13 to 16 in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The onus will be on the students to develop ways of raising funds and awareness.

He said: “Twenty-two boys will be trekking over 50kms through the Sahara desert to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“The trek will mark the culmination of a year’s fundraising for the charity.

“Each boy must raise over £1,500 in order to take part and there will be several initiatives organised by myself and colleagues, but the onus will be on the students to develop ways of raising funds and awareness.

“This will be the fourth such trip I have organised and so far we have raised in excess of £50,000 for Alzheimer’s charities.

“I felt as a teacher that parents simply paying for school trips was not an option, as I wanted the whole process to be an education in life skills as well as a chance to sample an alien culture.

“Boys who have taken part in the past feel empowered by their fundraising and this empowerment makes the trek and its sense of accompanying achievement all the more special.

“We have been especially supported in the past by Waitrose, who have allowed us to pack bags and we wil be in Rushden again on Easter Saturday.

“We have also been promised a slot standing outside the Saints rattling our buckets. Other fundraising activities have included banquets cooked by the students, the Waendal walk, discos for year groups, windscreen washing and busking. “These activities introduce the students to skills they didn’t know they had and situations where they learn and grow outside of the class room.”

Pupil Zach Cunningham is taking part in the trek and said: “In August 2014 my pop died after a long battle with vascular dementia.

“In September 2014 my family and I took part in a 10km memory walk raising £660 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

“I have now decided to go one step – or several steps – further to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research.”
