People in Wellingborough will be cheering on the world’s finest female cyclists as the Women’s Tour passes through the borough next week.

The Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Graham Lawman, will be joined by children from Wilby Primary School as the elite event goes along Mears Ashby Road into Wilby just after 1pm on Thursday (May 8).

Cllr Lawman said: “We are absolutely delighted that the inaugural Women’s Tour is coming through the borough’s villages of Sywell, Mears Ashby, Wilby and Wollaston and we want to show our support.

“There has quite rightly been a lot of attention focused on the first day of the event, which starts in Oundle and finishes in Northampton, but Wellingborough plays a key part in the second day.

“The cyclists pass through our villages so we’re going to cheer them on and show them a real Wellingborough welcome.”

Lisa Pearce, headteacher at Wilby Primary School, said: “The children are really excited that the tour passes so close to our school and we’re all looking forward to watching them go past.

“We’re spending time in our lessons learning about the race and it will be fantastic to join the mayor and see it all first hand.”

The mayor will be joined by the schoolchildren and other councillors and members of the public to see the Women’s Tour in Wilby.

They will be assembling at 12.45pm at the bottom of Mears Ashby Road, just before the cyclists turn onto Main Road.

The teams of the world’s top female cyclists are expected to pass through the village at speeds of up to 40kph and are due at about 1.10pm.
