The gym at Wellingborough’s Waendel leisure centre is getting ready to re-open after being refurbished and kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment.
A special open evening will take place on Wednesday to give people the opportunity to look around the new-look facility.
The event will be officially opened by the mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Barry Graves, at 5pm, and people can drop in throughout the evening until it finishes at 8.30pm.
Staff will be on hand to demonstrate the new equipment and answer questions, and anyone attending will be able to pick up free samples from event sponsors Lucozade and local company Just Eat Natural.
The council-owned gym has been given the £300,000 facelift, along with its sister facility at Redwell leisure centre, as part of a new leisure centre deal between the borough council and operator Places for People Leisure (PfPL).
Council leader Paul Bell said: “The refurbishment of the Waendel gym, along with the one at Redwell, is really good news.
“We’re very excited that it’s nearly completed and can’t wait to show people what it offers now, as we’re fully up to date with latest trends and equipment.
“It will improve the gym experience for our current members, and we also hope it will encourage new members.
“We renegotiated our contract earlier this year in order to allow both council-owned leisure centres in the town to remain open.
“The deal reduced the council’s contribution to running costs by millions of pounds and as part of that it was agreed we would invest capital funds into upgrading the gyms.
“The results should speak for themselves and I look forward to welcoming people to our new state-of-the-art facilities.”
Simon Churchman, contracts manager at Places for People Leisure, said: “We’ve installed new equipment not seen at the gym before, plus new strength and cardiovascular kit, as well as an improved layout, an updated audio visual system, and a full redecoration.
“The open evening is a great chance for people to drop in and test out the new facilities.
“Our staff will be giving tours and answering questions, and there will be delicious free refreshments on offer too.
“You don’t have to be a member to come along on Wednesday, and anyone that wants to have an induction session on the new equipment is very welcome to bring their workout kit and give it a go.”
The gym was closed from the beginning of September while the refurbishment work took place.
The facility will be open to customers from this Saturday (September 12) before the official launch event and open evening takes place on Wednesday.
