Wellingborough Council is changing the number of its automated payment line from today (Wednesday, July 1) to avoid costs for customers.
The new number will be 0333 772 0789.
Ofcom recently announced that they are changing the way that service numbers are charged, as part of their ‘UK calling’ programme.
This means that numbers beginning with 08, 09 or 118 will now be charged at 5p a minute.
The council’s current payment line number begins with 0845 and would be subject to the new charge.
A spokesman for Wellingborough Council said: “Changing the number to one beginning 0333 means that customers would only be charged at a standard local rate. The same rate applies whether customers call from landlines or mobiles.
“In addition, callers that have free inclusive call minutes to landlines also usually have calls to 0333 numbers included in their bundles, meaning that calls could be made to the new number free of charge.”
A recorded message has been set up on the old number to let customers know that they should redial the new number.
The council’s payment line is used by people in the borough to pay a number of bills, including council tax and business rates. It is a 24 hour automated service, allowing people to pay council bills at any time using their debit or credit card.
