A group of volunteers will soon be seen out and about with the launch of a new Street Watch scheme.

The volunteers got together last Wednesday (March 2) and with the support of the police have started a local Street Watch scheme to cover the Victoria ward of Wellingborough.

Street Watch is a community policing initiative started by the county’s police and crime commissioner Adam Simmonds.

It is aimed at encouraging people to form groups to keep an eye on their local area.

The Castle Fields group, which has been launched with five people but is keen to welcome new members, is the third such scheme in the area, with Hemmingwell and Finedon also participating in similar schemes.

Scheme co-ordinator Dave Smith said: “We are delighted to be able to finally get started and we hope many more local people will want to join us.

“We have been doing something similar in our park for a while, but this makes it much more official.

“Having visible Street Watch volunteers in the park will definitely help people to feel safer and hopefully keen to join in with some of the others events and activities we hold, like litter picking and musical concerts on the bandstand.”
