Hundreds of youngsters had fun in the sun at an Alice in Wonderland-themed play day at Wicksteed Park in Kettering.

Among the activities at the play day was a jam tart-eating unofficial world record attempt, with the park’s mascot Wicky Bear joining those eating the sweet treats – given out free to visitors.

The White Rabbit visited the park to welcome children and Wicky Bear to his tea party and there were also playing card-themed games and croquet on the lawn.

The park’s managing director Alasdair McNee estimated 400 to 500 youngsters had eaten jam tarts, adding: “We do one of these play days each season. This theme is to add a bit of a story to it.”

In the afternoon a huge game of hide and seek was played, encouraging youngsters to check out some of the recent improvements which have been made to the 93-year-old park.

Mr McNee said that, providing the weather is good, a range of special activities would also be put on on Thursday.
