VIDEO: Special night to celebrate unsung stars

A charity event to recognise people who have lived through tragedy and the people who have helped them raised more than £2,000.

Katrina Baker, of Selsey Road, Corby, organised the Shining Stars of Northamptonshire awards to highlight the hard work done by families, friends and carers of children with life-limiting illnesses.

Katrina lost her 22-month-old daughter Macy in March 2008 when she died of Trisonomy 13, a rare condition which affects the heart valves and lungs.

Since then Katrina, who has five other children, has worked hard to set up a charity called Macy’s Memory to support the families of terminally ill children.

She said the inspiration for the awards was Macy and explained: “We wanted to make people realise that behind the scenes there are often a lot of people who do help out, as well as the doctors and nurses.”

The categories included Most Supportive Sibling and and Most Supportive Friend and there were dozens of nominations for each one.

The presentation ceremony was held on Saturday at The Ritz in Desborough.

Katrina said: “The evening went brilliantly, Faryl Smith sang four times and presented two awards, and lots of the business sponsors have said they want to be involved again, we want to thank them all for their support.

“The evening went very quickly and I was very nervous as I’ve never done anything like this before. I know we made mistakes but we’d definitely like to run it again next year. We are thinking about changing the venue every year and moving the event around Northamptonshire to involve more people.”

Megan’s Flutterby Fund won Fundraiser of the Year. They said: “A special thank you to Katrina Baker and her family and friends who have put in so much hard work over these weeks to put on such a wonderful event.”
