Pytchley Road bridge in Kettering has reopened this afternoon (Friday, February 28).

The road, which has been closed since the beginning of December, was opened again to traffic at about 5pm.

Network Rail closed the bridge in order to electrify the Midland main line, which it says will result in improved services and quicker trains between Sheffield and London.

But residents and commuters had reported significant delays as a result of the closure, with traffic diverted via Barton Road and the A14 – which currently also has roadworks, with the Highways Agency building an extra lane in each direction.

Northants Telegraph photographer Alison Bagley was at the bridge when it reopened and was the first person to drive over it. She said motorists were being greeted with cheers from passers-by.

The video above shows Alison as she becomes the first person to drive over the newly opened bridge.
