A pair of brave staff members from Costa Coffee in Wellingborough ate ants, crickets, worms and even a pig’s eyeball to raise money for a good cause on Saturday (May 4).

Emma Anderson and Stephen Holloway faced off in the I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here-style competition.

The pair were asked questions by branch manager Rob Lawes, with the loser having to eat whatever was laid in front of them – although if neither knew the right answer they both had to try and swallow the awful morsels.

During the contest, the pair ate crickets, toasted ants, worm larvae, grasshoppers, pigs’ eyes and tripe, among others.

Spectators were asked to make donations to the Costa Foundation – Costa Coffee’s charity which builds schools in countries where the firm buys its coffee.

Emma said: “It was my idea. I wanted to do something to raise money for the foundation, and me and the rest of the staff managed to talk Stephen into it - but I don’t think he was very keen.”

The contest was watched by about 40 people.

Speaking after the challenge, Emma added: “I couldn’t eat the pig’s eye, although I had two attempts, it was just too slimy. The tripe was the easiest to eat.”

Stephen added: “The eye was the worst, the crickets weren’t too bad because they didn’t actually taste of anything.”

Telegraph reporter Michael Whelan filmed a video of the brave duo attempting to eat a pig’s eyeball each, followed by tripe.
