Staff at Corby’s BP Garage are showing their respect for the town’s Victoria Cross hero, Lance Corporal James Ashworth, by taking part in a 16-hour sponsored bike ride to raise cash for Armed Forces charities.
A total of 18 staff members from Corby and the BP Garage in Raunds are all pedalling while wearing super hero fancy dress costumes.
They started at 6am this morning (Saturday, April 6) and will complete their task at 10pm tonight.
They are each doing 20 minutes on the bike at a time, and they hope to have completed hundreds of miles between them by the time they finish tonight.
James McLoed, assistant manager at the garage, went to school with L/Cpl Ashworth and was keen to pay his respects for his former classmate by organising the charity event.
He said: “Our customers have been brilliant. It’s amazing how the community has come together.”
Manager Dawn Mardell said: “We are pleased to support this because he’s a local hero.
“The response we’ve had from our customers has been phenomenal.”
Staff from the Northampton garage also helped out at the garage today in order to enable the Corby staff to participate in the bike ride.
All of the money raised from the event will be donated to Help for Heroes and BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex Service Men’s Association.
