Only one valid nomination was received in a bid to fill nine vacancies on Oundle Town Council.

East Northamptonshire Council published a notice of election for the town council following the resignation of more than half of the council’s members in February.

The closing date for nomination papers was April 7, but the returning officer for East Northants Council only received one valid nomination ahead of the deadline.

While no further nominations were formally received by the returning officer, another 11 nomination papers were informally checked for validity prior to April 7.

Checks revealed that each of the 11 nominations received were found to be invalid for being incomplete or incorrect and have since been returned to the town council.

A statement released on Oundle Town Council’s website states: “As there were fewer valid nominations than seats available, the only validly nominated candidate is elected uncontested and will take office from Thursday 5 May 2016.

“The returning officer will confirm the date for the remaining vacancies to be filled by election in due course.”
