An uncle and niece who hit the headlines when they were born on the same day have made the news again 70 years later.

Carlos York, of Raunds, was born to Nellie York on March 18, 1942 and his niece Gill Byford, of Rushden, was born on the same day to Nellie’s daughter Joan Dicks.

Their arrival made the front page of the Evening Telegraph and appeared in the Daily Mirror.

And they are now making news again by donating £355 they received instead of gifts for their 70th birthdays to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Mrs Byford said: “We were born about 300 yards away from each other in Great Addington. Carl was born first at 1.15pm and I was born seven hours later so my grandmother became a mother and a grandmother on the same day.

“We went to the same village school and then we went to Thrapston Secondary Modern School. I don’t think of Carl as an uncle – he’s not old enough. It’s strange to think we were born on the same day but we’re used to the idea. We grew up knowing our birthdays were on the same day.”

Mrs Byford and Mr York held a joint celebration to mark their 21st birthdays and decided to mark their 70th birthdays by holding a party for about 100 relatives and friends at the weekend and raising money for charity.

Mrs Byford said: “We’d heard so much about the air ambulance and knew it doesn’t get any government funding.”

Joan was Nellie’s second daughter and Mrs Byford was Joan’s first child. Mr York was Nellie’s seventh child and she later had an eighth child.
