Desborough town councillor Phil Malin has died at the age of 80, following a short illness.

Mr Malin, who had served on the council for six years, was married to Kettering borough councillor and former mayor Mary.

His funeral takes place at 1pm in Loddington today (Thursday).

Mrs Malin, Kettering mayor in the 1995-96 civic year, said: “He loved his gardening and was devoted to his family but particularly his grandsons.

“He has two grandsons and he would always be there to take them to school or to collect them.”

Mr Malin, a painter and decorator by trade, was originally from Finedon.

When he and his wife moved to Desborough, she was asked to join the town council. But he said his wife had enough on her plate, and so volunteered to take on the role himself.

“It meant he got to know people quicker than I did,” she added.
