Drivers face delays on a main route into Kettering to allow for an upgrade of the gas mains.
Signs have gone up to warn people about the major gas works which are being carried out by National Grid in Northampton Road at the junction with Gipsy Lane in Kettering.
Temporary traffic signals will be in place while the work, which starts at the end of this week, takes place.
A spokesman for National Grid said: “Our engineers will be upgrading the gas mains in the A6013 Northampton Road where it meets the B5323 Gipsy Lane, Kettering.
“The vital work will start on Friday 31 March and will take two weeks to complete.
“It is being carried out because the older gas mains have reached the end of their working lives and need to be renewed.
“They will be replaced by new hard-wearing plastic pipe which, once in the ground, will last for several generations and will need no or little maintenance.
“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to motorists.
“Our engineers will be carrying out the work during the school holidays as there is less traffic on the roads.
“To carry out the work safely there will be temporary three-way traffic signals in Northampton Road where it meets Gipsy Lane.”
