Volunteers at a community station in Wellingborough have said they are pleased with the response to an open day held to look for new presenters.

Welly Radio was set up in November last year, and this afternoon (Sunday, March 3) welcomed opened its doors to the public.

Mark Jones, director of the station, which broadcasts online, said: “Today is to encourage even more members. We have about 30 active members at the moment and another group of supporters behind the scenes.

“It’s a community thing, so we all chip in. I felt Wellingborough needed its own voice, but I thought it should be something community-based.”

He said he had been expecting 10 to 15 people to turn up for the open day, but was overwhelmed when 30 came into the Silver Street studio in the first hour.

Welly Radio broadcasts live between 5pm and 9pm Monday to Friday, but also intends to be live on air at the weekends soon.

Mr Jones added: “People think radio is quite difficult and are frightened by it. Today was a chance to come in and see it’s very easy.”

He also said the new news programme on air between 5pm and 6pm daily – which is run in association with the Telegraph – was already one of the most popular broadcasts.

Anyone who wants to get involved with Welly Radio, or to arrange for a tour of the studio, should email info@wellyradio.com. You can also visit www.wellyradio.com.
