Repair work on Thrapston’s nine arches bridge is finishing early in time for the town’s Christmas lights spectacular on Saturday, November 28.

Starting at 3pm, entertainment will include a Rudolph Rodeo, a mini zoo, Christmas carols and festive food and drink before the lights are switched on by a special celebrity guest at 6pm.

Free raffle tickets will also be available giving people the chance to win Thrapston shopping vouchers worth £20 and £50.

The bridge, one of the main routes into Thrapston, was completely closed a few weeks ago after it was realised that the scaffolding being used for repairs posed a safety risk to both traffic and the workforce.

Northamptonshire County Council has worked with local councillors and traders to see what action could be carried out to mitigate the impact of the closure.

Cllr Michael Clarke, county council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “We understand that the sudden closure of the road for safety reasons has caused great inconvenience to the people of Thrapston, so we’ve really tried to pull out all the stops to get the work finished in time for the Christmas lights switch-on.

“Thrapston is a delightful market town with a real community spirit and wonderful independent shops that we must do our utmost to promote to both people in our county and to visitors from elsewhere.

“Town’s like this help give Northamptonshire its unique character and I’d like to encourage everyone to come along on Saturday and see for themselves just what’s on offer.”

Originally the road closure was due to be in place until December but the council has been able to double the number of stonemasons contracted to the job, due the cancellation of another project elsewhere.

Some of the county council’s gritting trucks and appliances from the county’s Fire and Rescue Service are also scheduled to make an appearance at Saturday’s event.

The free raffle tickets will be available between 3.30pm and 5.45pm at the event’s information stand, which will be located in the High Street close to the Chancery Lane junction.

A free ‘Love Thrapston’ bag will also be available for people who shop in the town.
