Tenants of a housing association will be able to get a helping hand with DIY jobs thanks to a new handyperson service.

Housing association Wellingborough Homes is offering the Handyperson Service to tenants over the age of 50 who may not be able to carry out such tasks themselves.

People will be able to get help with work such as hanging curtains, putting up shelves, small decorating jobs, hanging pictures or mirrors, supplying and fitting key safes and assembling small items of flat-pack furniture.

Louise Allen, Support Services Development Manager at Wellingborough Homes, said: “We have found there is a real demand among our tenants for this type of service, so we are delighted to be getting it off the ground.

“The service will help our tenants with little jobs that really make a house a home. It is aimed at helping people who need small DIY jobs doing but who cannot do them themselves, perhaps because they are frail or disabled.

“Instead of having to find someone to do the work, which may be quite expensive, they can just phone us and we will sort it out for them. The service makes such jobs affordable and also gives people the peace of mind that they will be using reputable, reliable and trustworthy tradespeople.

“All the members of the Handyperson Service works team are skilled, experienced, know the local area and have been CRB-checked, so using this service removes the anxiety our tenants might feel at letting someone into their home.

“We have just launched this service but we are sure the demand for it will grow quickly over the coming months, as word spreads.”

Wellingborough Homes has joined forces with two other local organisations to deliver the service – Serve, which offers support to older residents in Northamptonshire, and Care and Repair, based at Spire Homes, which provides help to disabled and older people in the area.

Tenants wanting to use the Handyperson Service can call Wellingborough Homes on 01933 234450 for more information or to book in a job.

A member of the customer service team will take some details, then Serve or Care and Repair will get back to the tenant with a quote so they know in advance what it will cost.

Costs start from £7.50 for a half-hour job.
