English teacher turned poet and rapper Mark Grist, who became an overnight celebrity when his teacher versus student rap battle gained more than three million hits on Youtube, is coming to Corby.
He will headline a Words And Music Weekender at The Core theatre, from Friday, November 2, to Sunday, November 4, leading poetry and lyrics workshops. He will also perform at the Words Showcase on Saturday evening.
Mark, of Peterborough, will be joined by a special mystery guest from BBC Introducing, who will be headlining the music line-up and performing at the Music Showcase on Sunday evening.
The Words And Music Weekender will see the theatre taken over by musicians, bands, poets, singers and songwriters who will be developing new music and sharing their work during open mic sessions and showcase performances.
The young people who take part will be able to meet the Northamptonshire’s team for BBC Introducing and find out more about how the music industry works.
Daytime workshops are for young people from 11 to 25 and the evening performances are for everyone.
Young Promoters, a group of local young artists and producers based at The Core, are taking a leading role in organising the weekend event.
Young Promoter Blane Chalmers said, “I was part of the band for The Core’s street sessions last summer. The other young people we met in the parks and on the estates told us they wanted somewhere to create their own music and not be stereotyped into one style of music by the way they choose to look.
“This spurred us to talk to Chris Sudworth, The Core’s creative director about what we could do and the Words and Music Weekender was born from that.
“We’ve had some amazing opportunities by being involved with The Core and we want more young people to have the experiences we’ve had.”
The Words And Music Weekender is on Friday, November 2, from 6pm to 9pm, and on Saturday, November 3, and Sunday, November 4, from midday until late.
Tickets for the Words Showcase on the Saturday, starting at 7pm, and the Music Showcase on Sunday, at 7pm, are £5 and Weekender Festival tickets, including workshops and both evening performances, are £10.
They can be booked by calling the ticket line on 01536 470470, or by visiting www.thecorecorby.com.
