More than 1,500 people in the county have already registered to take part in Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Marren Microwave, a local service company for commercial microwave ovens which has been established for 33 years, is just one of those supporting the annual fundraiser, which is taking place on Friday, September 28.

It will be the second year Marren Microwave has held a coffee morning and they are hoping to beat their total from last year, which was £397, and was raised by the 24 members of staff based at their Wollaston head office.

Marren’s coffee morning was not only a company event as they invited residents and other local companies from Wollaston to join in the fun including a ‘bake-off’.

Sarah Packwood, customer relationship manager, said: “There was fierce competition.”

This year, Sarah hopes to get the engineers involved who are based around the UK by encouraging them to ‘text2donate’.

Marren started running its coffee mornings when Sarah joined the company in 2010.

Sarah, who lives in Bozeat, then became a keen Macmillan volunteer this year and has worked on events such as the Castle Ashby Walk.

She has also got the company more involved by introducing dress down days at work on the final Friday of every month, which she calls ‘Muffty for Macmillan’.

On these days, staff pay £2 to dress down, which often includes dressing to a theme.

Marren as a company has also been donating to Macmillan for seven years. Every year, instead of sending Christmas cards, the firm asks people to donate to Macmillan.

The company has also supported one of their engineers who had throat cancer.

While having treatment, they employed a retired member to cover the engineer’s work, but still allowed him to go out with this member who was covering to try and boost his morale.

The engineer is now in remission and working back at Marren full-time.

There are currently more than 1,500 people registered to hold coffee mornings this year in Northamptonshire, but there is still room for more.
