A community garden project in a village near Rushden is celebrating winning a £50,000 grant from ITV.
Stanwick Outdoors, a scheme led by the parish council, has won a vote in ITV’s People’s Millions competition.
Parish council chairman Jenny Hodgson said the result of the vote, which was announced yesterday (Wednesday, November 26) said she was shocked and delighted to have won.
The garden will have some plots available for allotments, with other spaces kept free for community use. The village school and nursery are among the organisations to have expressed an interest in using the garden.
Jenny said: “It’s a fantastic outdoors project to bring something to Stanwick that we don’t have.
“It’s a whole community project where all ages can get involved. We are also hoping that, over the years, it will grow.”
Once the paperwork is completed, work on the project will get under way – with the aim being for it to start in early January – and it is hoped the community garden will be open by spring next year.
Jenny said: “I would like to see people in their plots by March or April.”
She also paid tribute to everyone who voted for the project – with one person even calling in from Australia to register her support.
