Two St John Ambulance cadets have been awarded first aid ambassador roles in the county.

Lauren Turner, 14, from Thrapston, and Lucy Hankins, 15, from Kettering were appointed as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of the Year and High Sheriff’s Cadet of the Year respectively.

Their appointments mean the youngsters will attend events with the High Sheriff and Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire alongside cadets from other youth organisations including air cadets, sea cadets and army cadets.

The two girls were chosen for their roles as part of St John Ambulance’s Regional Cadet of the Year competition on Sunday, September 29, which aimed to select cadets from across the east midlands.

Lucy Hankins was also the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Northamptonshire during 2013.

As well as actively providing first aid at many events locally, Lauren and Lucy have worked towards the charity’s Grand Prior award which marks at least three years of sustained effort studying 24 different subjects - from using social media and working in the community, to outdoor pursuits and first aid.

They regularly provide first aid support at public events including local fetes and fairs and firework displays, and have collectively given more than 300 voluntary hours to their community in the past year alone.

Lauren and Lucy were presented with certificates for completing level two in competitions towards their Grand Prior Award.

Lauren said she was delighted to be the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of the Year, adding: “It’s a great honour and I am delighted to be representing other cadets in the county and the east midlands. I firmly believe that anyone, whatever age, can learn first aid and would like to see more young people like me learning the skills that can save a life.”

Lucy said: “St John Ambulance can teach you how to save someone’s life but being a member also helps you develop leadership and other skills that can be used in everyday life. I would recommend for everyone to learn first aid.”

Jason Loughran, St John Ambulance Regional Youth Manager, said: “Lauren and Lucy are great examples of dedicated volunteers who truly believe in the difference that first aid can make to saving someone’s life. We are pleased and proud that we have got both the High Sheriff’s Cadet and the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of the Year in Northamptonshire. Lauren and Lucy are an inspiration to all our young people.”
