Shoplifting in Wellingborough has fallen over the recent Christmas and New Year period compared to the same time last year.

Since the launch of the Wellingborough Retail Crime Initiative in November shoplifting offences have decreased by half, say police.

The initiative aims to tackle shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

Officers in the town also launched an operation in November to run alongside the WRCI, with increased officer numbers in the town focused on targeting repeat offenders.

Safer Community Sergeant Paul Valentine said: “Normally you’d expect to see an increase in shoplifting offences over the Christmas period and I’m very pleased we’ve bucked this trend.

“Officers have been working alongside local traders to share intelligence and prevent, disrupt and deter those intent on committing retail crime.

“The results have been quite dramatic and we will continue to work hard to ensure Wellingborough town centre is a safe and enjoyable place to shop.”
