A man who sexually assaulted a girl at knifepoint and attempted to abduct another has been jailed for eight years.

Peter Smith, 33, from Rothwell, has been jailed for eight years, with a further two years on licence, after being convicted of two counts of attempted abduction, one of sexual assault and one of possession of a knife.

Smith attempted the abduction of a 17-year-old girl in Desborough in February. The girl managed to get the partial registration of the vehicle he was driving and he was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence.

A short while later, police officers noted an artist’s impression issued by Leicestershire Police bore a striking resemblance to Smith.

The man in question in Leicestershire was wanted for stopping a girl in an alley in Market Harborough in November 2011 and threatening her with a knife. He then committed a sexual assault on the girl.

Both forces worked closely to bring both cases to Northampton Crown Court. Smith has been placed on the sex offender’s register.
