TRADING standards officers are warning people about a security alarm scam.
Residents have complained of receiving unsolicited telephone calls from companies offering to install free or cheap security systems.
Trading standards, which is advising customers against buying security systems from companies cold-calling either on the telephone or at the door, said ongoing maintenance costs are high and there is a cancellation fee.
It advises people to get quotes from at least three security companies who are subject to independent inspection by a recognised body, either the National Security Inspectorate or Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board.
Consumers interested in buying new services can find details of reputable traders through the Buy with Confidence scheme operated by trading standards.
