Shoppers are being invited to enjoy a day at the seaside from this weekend in Wellingborough town centre.
The town might be more than 70 miles from the nearest beach but for three weeks in August a 130sq m beach will be located in Market Street, in the circle mosaic in front of McDonald’s, from August 3 to 18 between 10am and 4pm.
There will be deckchairs, buckets and spades as well as sounds of the sea to capture the seaside experience.
Specially-made Wellingborough rock will be on sale and there will also be a stilt walker on Saturdays and Sundays.
The beach has been organised by the Wellingborough Business Improvement District (BID), which stages events to encourage people into the town centre to boost trade.
The organisation has also recently launched a smartphone app which will act as a virtual loyalty and discount card for Wellingborough shoppers.
The application will carry electronic discount coupons for town centre shops and also reward customer loyalty, with the use of QR codes allowing for authentication of check-ins at each shop.
It also has offers, a business directory and an interactive and searchable map as well as news. The free app, which will act as a fully-interactive town centre guide, is available on Apple and Android smartphones.
BID manager John Cable said: “We hope it will encourage people to take advantage of what’s going on in the town centre.”
