A team of four boys were named under-nines chess champions for the county, and three of them went on to be named Midlands champions for their age group.
The four youngsters from Redwell Junior School in Wellingborough won the county championships, which were held at the Malcolm Arnold Academy in Northampton, on February 4.
Three of the boys – Tyler and Pacey Gwynne and Connor Arthurs – went on to represent the county at the under-nine Midlands chess championships on Saturday and were again named champions. They will take part in an under-nines competition in Essex tomorrow.
The school’s headteacher Sue Peel said: “We are very proud of our chess players and hopefully they will continue to succeed. Thanks go to John Warren for training them.”
