ALMOST 300 town centre parking spaces will be lost when the car park above Greyfriars bus station in Northampton is forced to shut down due to safety concerns in two weeks' time.
Northampton Council has announced plans to close the car park above the bus station after investigations discovered the crumbling building was damaging cars.
The bus station has been widely condemned in recent years and was named as one of 10 buildings shortlisted for the TV programme Demolition.
This week it was named as the ugliest bus station in the region in a TV poll.
The 295 spaces above the bus station are used by people who have parking permits provided by their employers.
Their spaces will be transferred to the Mayorhold after the bus station car park closes on July 1.
Council insiders have suggested the car park could remain closed if a deal to expand the Grosvenor Centre is signed within the next two to three weeks as expected.
The Shopmobility service, which is based in the car park, will stay where it is for the time being.
