Youngsters who fancy improving their mountain biking skills, or are keen to have a go in a safe environment can sign up to a summer course.
Rutland Cycling is running a Saturday mountain biking skills course at Fineshade Woods, near Corby.
The course runs for six weeks from Saturday, July 27, to Saturday, August 31, and is aimed at 11 to 25-year-olds.
The course will be led by qualified mountain bike trail leader, Ryan Corbyn. He said: “This is a cycling course to get you fitter, safer and more confident.
“It’s also really good value compared to many sports courses and Fineshade Wood has plenty of different trails so each week will be different. Cycling offers great transport, recreation and fitness benefits for young people - this is the summer to get on your bike.”
Each session will consist of a trail ride, including skills sections, over non-technical terrain in Fineshade Woods.
As part of the course, participants will have an introduction to trail riding, learning about stopping points, and group riding as well as trailside bike maintenance and emergency repairs.
There will also be an opportunity to learn about navigational techniques, map reading and riding point-to-point.
As the course is based in Fineshade Woods, it will give the young riders the chance to learn in a traffic-free environment.
Sarah Walker, recreation manager for Fineshade Woods, said: “Our cycle trails are ideal for learning or improving your cycling in a traffic-free environment and as we’re open all year round it is a great alternative to the gym for keeping fit. We hope this course from Rutland Cycling helps encourage a new generation of mountain bikers to come and enjoy the forest.”
The course costs £30 per rider (if you have your own bike) or £60 per rider (if you wish to hire a bike)
and you have to sign up for all six sessions. Participants must be able to ride a bike independently without assistance and be able to cycle for 15-20 minutes without stopping.

You will be sent a consent form and information sheet about the course.
