A road has been closed while emergency services deal with a damaged gas main which caught fire on a building site.

National Grid and firefighters were called to the site in Chester Road, Wellingborough, at 1.15pm today (Wednesday) after a gas pipe ruptured.

A spokesman for National Grid said: “We were called at 1.15pm today to reports of a damaged gas main on what appears to be a building site on Chester Road.

“Two engineers are there at the moment and another team of engineers is on its way.”

The fire service alerted police to the incident, and officers have closed off Chester Road at both ends.

A police spokesman said: “The fire brigade and National Grid are dealing with it and it is all under control.”

A tweet from the fire service said: “Gas pipe ruptured and involved in fire, @northantsfire standing by whilst incident dealt with by National Grid Gas Chester Rd W’boro.”
