A SCHOOL’s May king and queen were crowned by a member of staff who is retiring in the summer.

Teacher Angela Gyves performed the ceremony at Cranford Church of England Primary School.

Maggie Stear, 10, was crowned queen and Joe Cole, 11, was appointed May king.

The event, organised by the school’s parent, teacher and friends association, drew record crowds.

Debbie Cox, the school’s business manager, said: “Everyone worked very hard on organising the May fair and people had a great time. We had the biggest turnout ever and the rain stayed away.”

Visitors were treated to maypole and country dancing displays and singing. There was a bouncy castle, face-painting, stalls and refreshments.
