Developers have started work on a 59-apartment retirement complex in Kettering.

Bournemouth-based McCarthy and Stone is building the one and two-bedroom apartments, which are exclusively available to people aged over 60, in St Mary’s Road in the town.

The firm was given planning permission for the development on the site of the former Tresham Institute earlier this year.

McCarthy and Stone’s sales and marketing director Gill Sabin said: “Starting construction of our Later Living development in Kettering marks an exciting milestone in helping the over 60s in Kettering make the most of later life.

“The apartments will be low maintenance in design and will benefit from modern fittings, good security and will have a number of specialist features.”

The site where the apartments will be built has been subject to a number of planning applications in recent years, many of them for housing and apartment developments.

In 2007, permission was granted for 15 homes and 84 flats.

However, in their planning documents, McCarthy and Stone said this development was never pursued because of the decline in the housing market during that period.
