Plans to turn Kettering factory site devastated by fire into flats for young people needing support

The Carey Street site has been derelict since this blaze in 2010.

A planning application has been made to turn a former factory site in Kettering into 42 flats for young people requiring accomodation.

The site in Carey Street has been empty for a number of years and was gutted by a large fire in December 2010.

But now property developer Seagrave Developments has made a preliminary application to convert the site into a 3,777sq m redvelopment.

The site has previously been used to manufacture lighting and fittings, and prior to that was a shoe factory.

If the plans are approved, there will be 42 one-bed maisonettes ove three floors, with 16 parking spaces at the rear of the building.

The planning application reads: “The area is within walking distance to the town centre and has excellent public transport links.

“In the circumstances, it is considered a sustainable location that is suitable for this type of residential development.

“It is earmarked for young adults requiring supported but independent living.

“There has been no know interest to resuscitate the employment use or any demonstrable evidence of active interest in the site.

“There are also no immediate job losses associated with the proposed change of use.

“The supply of housing, especially the provision for a special group involving young adults requiring independent living and the proposed accomodation for the disabled, is a social benefit which carries weight in favour of the proposal.

“This weight is magnified to the extent it is very considerable because such a need in the borough is well established and the council is a willing partner in the delivery of this proposal.”
