The University of Northampton has submitted a detailed planning application to the borough council for its new £330m Waterside Campus.
If the planning application is approved, work is expected to start on the new campus, off Bedford Road, in 2015 and will be opened in September 2018.
A statement released by the university said the new campus would feature “flexible learning and teaching spaces for the use of innovative technologies, alongside a vibrant mix of leisure and retail facilities”.
Professor Nick Petford, vice-chancellor of the University of Northampton, said: “This planning submission is another step in the development of our plans to relocate to the new Waterside Campus.
“These academic buildings will be an impressive place for our students and staff to learn, teach, research and network.
“This is a hugely exciting development for both the University and for Northampton. It will inject over £330million investment into Northampton to develop the existing brownfield site.”
