Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough and Rushden, trended for a short while on Twitter this afternoon after saying the speed the same-sex marriage bill is going through parliament is a ‘joke.’
Mr Bone, the Conservative MP, said the bill is being rushed through without proper scrutiny and “It is going to be a joke.” But Julian Huppert , the Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, said the two days of debate over the bill is ‘quite sufficient’.
The proposals to legalise same-sex marriage in England and Wales are currently being debated, with Mr Bone and several other MP’s voicing their opposition.
MPs gave their support in principle to the bill in February but are now discussing proposed amendments.
The Marriage Bill was approved by a 225-vote majority when it was last debated by MPs in February, but nearly half of all Tories voted against it - including Mr Bone who voted ‘strongly’ against it.
Tory opposition have tabled a proposal to allow heterosexual couples to enter into civil partnerships, if gay couples are allowed to get married.
