A PETITION has been launched by parents who are unhappy about a new name chosen for two schools when they merge.
Wheb Oakway infants and Oakway junior schools in Wellingborough merge in September the new school will be called Diamond Learning Community. The name was selected by parents through a vote but a number of parents say they are unhappy with the name change.
A campaign group, the Oakway Parents Action Group, has been set up on Facebook and has more than 750 members. A petition is available to sign at The Well cafe, KD Supermarket and Hemmingwell Community and Skills Centre.
Cathy Mulholland from the group said: “The petition is going really, really well. We have got a meeting with the MP Peter Bone and we are going to put the case to him.”
Parent Jo Chambers said: “I think the biggest issue we all have is the name of the school is nothing to do with the area.”
Headteacher Cheryl Buckle said: “We have agreed to a meeting between the chair of governors, the business manager and myself and there’s three members of the action group attending.
“They have put forward a proposal that we will talk to them about in that meeting. As far as we are concerned we have gone through a consultation process, we have asked people for their views and we have taken all of their views and opted for a name of the school that was strongly supported.”
