A brave paperboy who came to the aid of his employer after he was viciously attacked by a man wielding a machete has been crowned 2012 News Deliverer of the Year.
Sixteen-year-old Tom Maynard, who works for Momi News in Newton Road, Rushden, was honoured at an annual awards ceremony organised by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents in London on Tuesday, October 23.
Tom was in the shop in November last year when a thief armed with a machete entered and demanded that the owner, Mohan Momi, open the safe.
When Mr Momi refused to do so he was hit over the head with the machete causing a deep cut. The offender then fled without any money.
Tom immediately called for an ambulance and alerted the police. He also tended to Mr Momi’s wounds. The brave deliverer received his award from Neil Jagger of Mail Newspapers who sponsor the news delivery category, at a ceremony at London’s Plaza Park Riverbank Hotel.
Now into their ninth year, the NFRN Awards are a widely respected industry accolade, which focus on the news and convenience retailing sector. This year more than 350 people, from all sections of the newstrade, attended the ceremony.
