The number of people claiming jobseeker’s allowance fell in the north of the county last month, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The total number of people claiming the benefit dropped from 5,844 in February to 5,568 in March. The number of claimants in March 2013 was 8,439.

The number dropped in all four local authorities in our area, with the proportion of people claiming JSA standing at 1.8 per cent in East Northants, 2.7 per cent in Kettering, 3.2 per cent in Wellingborough and 3.5 per cent in Corby.

March’s figures follow rises in the JSA claimant count in the previous two months.

However, in East Northants, just 978 people claimed the benefit last month – the lowest figure since October 2008.
