Councillors have agreed to make a compulsory purchase order for a property blighted by drugs and anti-social behaviour.

The derelict house, 111 Midland Road, Wellingborough, was closed by police for 48 hours last month under legislation which only came into force in October as part of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Magistrates then backed a police application to close the property, which is where Steven Chennell, 48, died in a blaze in March and had been plagued by drugs and anti-social behaviour, for another three months.

Wellingborough Council’s services committee agreed this week to a compulsory purchase order for the house so it can be re-sold, renovated and brought back into use.
