People pledging to get fit this new year have plenty of opportunities with free jogging groups, a new ladies-only gym and vouchers for a healthy eating course and Zumba classes.
Run England is promoting two jogging groups in Kettering, Kettering Council is offering free passes for its Healthy Weight Challenge and Zumba classes, and ladies-only gym The Fitness Factory opened in Elizabeth Street, Corby yesterday.
Val Hitchman, head of community services at Kettering Council, said “If anyone is looking for a fresh start in 2012 then there is a huge choice of activities available with a focus on exercise, your diet or both.
“Hopefully we can contribute to NHS Northamptonshire’s aim of making Northamptonshire the fittest county in the country.”
Anyone who attends the Zumba class at Ise Valley Pavilion, Kettering, at 7pm every Tuesday or the Healthy Weight Challenge at the council’s offices in Bowling Green Road, which starts on Thursday, January 26, will get a free voucher for the other scheme.
A mixed-sex jogging group for beginners will start at Rockingham Road Pleasure Park, Kettering, at 10am on Sunday.
A group is also led from Kettering General Hospital every Friday from 1pm.
Maggie Mulholland, who works at the hospital, started the group to help her workmates get fit. She gradually encouraged the group from running for 30 seconds to three miles without stopping.
Ms Mulholland said: “Last year I was a size 16 but I got a dog and found just walking I had gone down to a size 14.
“The first week I was quite nervous and although I found running for a couple of minutes tough, I really enjoyed it and couldn’t wait for the second week.”
