There are no excuses for dropping litter or flytipping – that’s the message behind a campaign being relaunched to help clean up Wellingborough.
Wellingborough Council’s annual No Excuses roadshows start on Tuesday, July 23, in Eastfield Park, before travelling all over the borough throughout the summer.
The campaign, which first launched in 2010, runs throughout the year with community litter picks and school assemblies, but intensifies over the summer with targeted roadshows in the borough’s parks.
As well as increasing awareness of the problems caused by littering, the roadshows give people the opportunity to report environmental issues in their neighbourhoods.
Senior support officer at Wellingborough Norse Mark Reneerkens said: “We hear lots of excuses from people who drop litter, ranging from ‘it’s so small I didn’t think it would matter’ when chucking away a cigarette end, to ‘the birds will eat it’ when discarding half-eaten food.
“The message we want to get across is that it’s all litter, and together with dog fouling, flytipping and graffiti, it all adds up to making a mess of our neighbourhoods and costs time and money to clear up.
“We all need to take responsibility for keeping our environment unspoiled.
“This becomes even more important during the summer, when people are out picnicking and enjoying the parks.”
The roadshows are run by Wellingborough Norse, the company which carries out environmental services on behalf of the council, and they focus on the numerous offences which spoil communities including flytipping, dog fouling, cigarette ends, chewing gum and littering from vehicles.
At previous roadshows hundreds of people have turned up to give details about trouble spots, fines have been issued to offenders, and advice and information handed out.
The roadshows will visit Eastfield Park on July 23, Queensway Park on July 25, Castle Fields Park on July 30, Croyland Park on July 31, Kilborn Park on August 2, Irchester Park on August 6, Wellingborough town centre on August 14, Earls Barton rec on August 16, Bassetts Park on August 21 and Finedon rec on August 23. The roadshows will run from 10am to 3pm. Times and locations may be subject to change.
