Councils in our area are to receive more than £6m from the Government as part of a bonus aimed at increasing the number of new homes.

Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough councils benefited from the cash, which authorities can be spent on anything.

The New Homes Bonus rewards authorities for the construction of newly-built homes and for bringing empty properties back into use.

The Government has announced the bonuses councils will receive in the forthcoming financial year, 2014/15.

Corby Council will be given £2,142,908, East Northamptonshire Council £1,524,817, Kettering Council, £1,600,897 and Wellingborough Council £848,184.

Housing Minister Kris Hopkins said councils are free to spend the money as they see fit, including freezing council tax.

He added: “Councils across the country have received more than £2bn for their part in getting Britain building, and leading to housing construction reaching its highest levels for seven years.”
