A couple of sports enthusiasts hope that the personal service in their new gym will draw in people intimidated by larger clubs.
Marc Bates and partner Sue Beckett opened Steps Fitness Club opened in Bridge Street, Rothwell, last Thursday.
Mr Bates, 38, of Torksey Close, Corby, said: “We want to offer people something a lot more friendly and intimate with a one-to-one service than big clubs.”
Whereas some larger gyms can take 70 people at any one time, Steps will have a total membership of 100.
Mr Bates, who worked as a fitness instructor at Corby East Midlands International Pool for six months before fulfilling his dream of opening the gym, said the smaller membership would allow him to offer one-to-one coaching.
He said in bigger clubs members see a different instructor each time.
The gym has no pool or classes, but it has a variety of resistance and cardio machines.
Among its weight machines are a ‘pec deck’ for toning your chest, a lateral pull-down and a rowing machine.
It also has a leg press, three treadmills, four bikes and a cross trainer.
There is also a full range of free weights, adjustable benches and a stretching area.
Before becoming an instructor for Corby Council, for who he still does occasional training sessions, Mr Bates did production work.
He said: “A lot of people go to work to earn a wage but I got to the point in life that I wanted more than that.
“I want to help the community.
“I get job satisfaction from guiding people and getting them fit.”
Mr Bates also said the quality of the equipment would be a draw for fitness enthusiasts.
He said most of the customers had never seen an Ab Coaster, an American machine for working abdominal muscles, before.
The gym is the only one in Rothwell, which has no leisure centre.
Mr Bates said: “It saves people having to travel out of town. It’s local people we are hoping to attract.”
