Young people are being invited to join a new fire cadets scheme.
The Community Fire Cadets is a new initiative aimed at young people aged 13 to 17 led by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire.
Each cadet will be issued with a uniform and personal protection equipment.
They will get the chance to use specially-adapted fire equipment and complete fire drills using fire-fighting equipment such as hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus.
The programme will also include swift water training at the Nene Whitewater Centre.
The scheme is not just for those who wish to join the fire service or uniformed services but for any young person who enjoys being active in their community, meeting new people, learning new skills and would like to become an ambassador for the fire and rescue service.
Cllr Andre Gonzalez de Savage, county council cabinet member for strategic infrastructure, economic growth and public protection, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people in the county.
“By joining up to the Community Fire Cadets scheme, they will learn how to work as a team, they will improve their communication skills and see their confidence increase.
“They will develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, all while having fun and making new friends at the same time.“
The one-year programme is part of the national fire cadet initiative and aims to develop citizenship in young people and to develop fire and rescue ambassadors who will work alongside full-time and retained firefighters to support the prevention agenda.
The informal sessions will be led by qualified and experienced youth workers plus community fire cadets will also have the opportunity to plan and deliver their own community-based projects and to be involved in fundraising events.
The first session will take place on Tuesday, September 24, at Mereway Fire Station in Northampton from 7pm to 9pm.
Anyone interested in taking part can download an application form at http://www.cypn.org/fire_cadets.html and return it to Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire by August 30.
