More than 40 jobs are to go with the closure of the Co-op store in Corby town centre.

Following an announcement earlier this year that the Post Office branch inside the Co-op store in Alexandra Road had been given notice to leave, it has now been confirmed that the food store is also set to close in January next year.

Unfortunately this closure will affect 42 members of staff which the society is now in consultation with

Consultation has started with the 42 staff who will be affected by the closure.

A spokesman for Central England Co-operative said: “I can confirm that the society is proposing to close its food store including Post Office and travel shop on Alexandra Road, Corby, on Saturday, January 16, 2016.

“The difficult decision to close this store, travel shop and Post Office has been taken following a full review of its trading performance.

“Like other retailers, we are constantly adapting to retail challenges at a local level, including the impact of competition, and this decision is necessary to protect the long-term future and growth of the society as a whole.

“Post Office Limited was given formal notification of the closure in January this year.

“Unfortunately this closure will affect 42 members of staff which the society is now in consultation with.

“When taking these decisions we always aim to take into account the best interests of both the business and our colleagues.

“Where possible we aim to offer colleagues opportunities to be redeployed into other business areas or new stores being opened as part of the society’s on-going growth strategy.”

The Northants Telegraph reported earlier this year that customers would no longer be able to use the Post Office services offered at the Co-op store from January.

However, the Co-op was unable to confirm at the time if the food store would also be closing.

Speaking at the time, Post Office bosses said they were trying to find new premises so they could continue to provide a service to customers in the town.

They said they remained committed to customers in Corby and wanted to hear from any retailers who would be interested in working with them.
