Arsonists have destroyed a much-loved piece of children’s play equipment at a Corby park.

The pirate ship at Glastonbury Road playground on the town’s Beanfield Estate was destroyed in the early hours of Tuesday, causing an estimated £20,000 of damage.

Now police are hunting for those responsible.

Ward Councillor, Paul Beattie, on behalf of himself and Ward Councillors Mary Butcher and Ann Brown, said: “We are extremely disappointed and angered by this utterly mindless act that has ruined a popular local play amenity.”

The council say they will consider replacing the play equipment but because of the cost of the damage, it will certainly not be until 2017.

Northamptonshire Police, who are investigating the incident, have appealed for anyone who knows anything about the attack to call them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
