Man suffered fractured skull in lift shaft fall at Newlands Centre, Kettering

A CLEANER who fell down a lift shaft in Kettering is in hospital after suffering a fractured skull and a broken ankle and ribs.

The contractor was cleaning the inside windows of the shaft at The Newlands Shopping Centre when he fell at about 2.45pm yesterday.

It was thought he had fallen 20ft to the ground floor, but an investigation has since found he fell 50ft.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Coventry Hospital.

Centre manager Neil Griffin described the unnamed man as ‘not in a good way’ this morning.

The lift where he fell remains closed.

The centre, however, is open as usual today.

See tomorrow’s Evening Telegraph for the latest on the man’s condition and the investigation into the incident.
