A 21-year-old man was imprisoned for going equipped for theft within 24 hours of being arrested.
Police were called by a member of the public who reported seeing a man acting suspiciously near a shop in St Osyths Lane, Oundle, on Thursday, August 9.
Officers went to the shop and stopped a man matching the description given. When they searched him they found items that would assist with the theft of money from cash machines.
The man, Ionut Ciofu, from London, was arrested for having items in his possession for use in theft and was charged with the offence later that day.
He appeared before Corby Magistrates’ Court on Friday, August 10, and plead guilty. He was sentenced to four months imprisonment.
Sergeant Phil Holton, from the East Northants Safer Community Team, who attended the incident and arrested Ciofu, said: “This is a very pleasing outcome and sends a strong message to criminals not to come to Northamptonshire to commit crime.
“It is also a timely reminder to the public to be aware when using any ATM of anything attached to the machine which looks out of the ordinary.
“In this incident, the vigilance of local people in seeing a man who looked out of place and calling the police has led to us making an arrest, seizing a vehicle, and articles he was using to try and steal. It has also resulted in very strong evidence against this man, leaving him no choice but to plead guilty.
“Within 24 hours of the report of the crime, he has been sent to prison.”
